Time beside the sea

Walk along the palm-lined shore

Enjoy Lamai’s curved sand and palm-lined coast. Walk with your partner or family, then have a meal nearby. If you want to see both Chaweng and Lamai, look up the road journey between them when arranging accommodation.

Make time for walking as well as swimming

Some parts of Lamai have deep water and potentially strong waves. With children, leave plenty of time for a walk on the sand and a meal nearby. If swimming is permitted locally, keep children from going far out.

Swimming, waves and local conditions

Some sections can have deep water and strong waves. Keep children from going far out, even where the water appears shallow. Follow local instructions about permitted swimming areas.

Do not swim while red flags are flying. Read the marine forecast before leaving and follow local swimming instructions after arrival. Waves and weather may delay or cancel boat trips, so ask about bad-weather conditions when booking.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lamai suitable for swimming with children?

Some parts have deep water and potentially strong waves, so take particular care. Keep children from going far out even where it appears shallow. Use only areas permitted on the day, and allow time for a family beach walk or a meal as well.

Can I walk continuously along the beach from Chaweng to Lamai?

No. Lamai is a separate beach south of Chaweng. Travel between them using the island’s roads; they are not one continuous stretch of sand.

Can I enter the water when there is a red flag?

No. A red flag means swimming is prohibited. Even if the sea looks calm, stay out of the water and spend your time on the shore.
