For travel around the extensive outdoor areas, you can take the zoo shuttle or rent a golf cart. The shuttle is charged per ride and a golf cart is rented in two-hour blocks. If you are travelling with older companions or someone who finds long walks difficult, choose an area to explore and consider using a vehicle.
Songkhla Zoo is described as the first zoo established in southern Thailand, with development starting in 1989. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports’ facility information lists the outdoor grounds on Khao Rup Chang and animals including tapirs, small deer, giraffes, bears, tigers and monkeys.
Look for differences in each animal: a tapir’s long snout, the small build of the deer and a giraffe’s long neck. It is a good place to visit with children curious about animals.
The facility information also lists parrots, macaws, cassowaries and flamingos. Compare their bright feathers, beaks and legs with the mammals in other areas.
The outdoor grounds also offer views of the surrounding Songkhla landscape. Wildlife, penguin and tiger-feeding programmes have different schedules and rest days, so allow time to get between the bird exhibits and any session you want to see.
Existing official information lists Wednesday as the rest day for the wildlife programme, Tuesday for the seal and penguin programme, and Monday for tiger feeding. Public holidays may be exceptions, so a day when the zoo is open does not necessarily mean every programme is available.
Tiger feeding is a scheduled programme viewed under staff guidance, not an activity where visitors feed animals on their own. Times and locations can also change on the day. Songkhla Aquarium at Laem Son On is a separate facility, so do not assume the zoo’s activities or tickets apply there.
The wildlife programme is listed as resting on Wednesday, the seal and penguin programme on Tuesday, and tiger feeding on Monday. Public holidays may be exceptions, and each programme runs at its listed time and location.
