Crafts in different materials on a silversmithing street
Wua Lai is a street south of Chiang Mai where silversmiths still have shops. At the Saturday market, you can see lacquerware, sculptures, lamps, silk and textiles as well as silver jewellery.
Bags, fabric and household pieces woven by hill-tribe communities are also featured. Silver, lacquer, wood and fabric come together along the street, so you can compare items made from different materials and techniques from one shop to another.
Choose dinner from the food stalls
Choose from grilled fish, som tam, pad Thai or satay with peanut sauce. Coconut sweets and fruit smoothies are also available for a light treat after dinner.
The silversmith shops and Saturday stalls make different plans
The silversmith shops are permanent, but the market stalls selling crafts and food fill the street on Saturday evenings. Visiting during the day to look at the silver shops feels different from coming to the Saturday market for dinner at the stalls.
The Sunday Ratchadamnoen Market is in a different location. If you plan to visit both of Chiang Mai’s walking streets, go to Wua Lai on Saturday and the other market on its Sunday route.
