Photograph the damage and keep your baggage tag and report. Check the airline’s separate written-notice requirements after the airport report.

Show the damage before leaving the airport

Check the suitcase and contents at baggage reclaim. Show airline staff the damage before going outside. Keep the baggage tag and take photographs of the damaged parts, along with your flight and contact details.

Keep the report and submit the required written notice

Ask for a copy of the Property Irregularity Report (PIR), if issued, and its reference number. Follow the responsible airline’s separate written-notice deadline and required evidence. A report at the desk does not remove the need to meet those conditions.

Separate airline handling from an insurance claim

Keep damage photographs, the report, the airline’s reply and receipts. Repair, replacement and reimbursement depend on the carrier’s applicable conditions; insurance depends on your policy. Check the country-specific guidance rather than assuming identical cover.
