THAILAND ENTRY GUIDE

Thailand Visa Types: Tourism, Work, Study and Longer Stays

A vacation, a job and a course of study call for different entry preparations. On a U.S. ordinary passport, start by seeing whether your vacation qualifies for visa exemption. Tourism entry cannot replace the permission needed for work or study. Decide what you will do and how long you will stay, then prepare the category that fits.

Visa exemption, TDAC and a visa have different roles

Visa exemption lets eligible travelers enter without obtaining a visa in advance. TDAC is the online arrival declaration. A visa is issued for a purpose such as tourism, work or study. Submitting TDAC does not mean you have received a visa.

For U.S. ordinary passport tourism, the embassy states a maximum visa-exempt stay of 30 days under the scheme effective September 15, 2026. Companions with other passports need their own nationality’s conditions. Reading an American English guide does not make U.S. passport eligibility apply to another nationality.

Choose the category for your actual purpose

First decide what you will do in Thailand, then find the matching category below. Thai e-Visa separates tourism, work, study and other purposes. Each category has its own eligibility and documents; similar names do not make their conditions interchangeable. Read the detailed requirements for your intended activity.

Tourist Visa
For tourism and vacations; distinguish single-entry and multiple-entry conditions.
Work & Business
For the relevant employment or business purpose. Tourism exemption and TDAC do not give permission to work.
Studying / Non-Immigrant ED
For study at an educational institution and the applicable education or training purpose.
Retirement / Non-Immigrant O or O-A
For eligible retirees meeting the relevant age and financial requirements. Conditions differ by category.
DTV / Destination Thailand Visa
For qualifying workcation and Thai soft-power activities, among the applicable purposes. It is a different category from a tourist visa.
Transit Visa
For qualifying transit, sports or crew purposes and the relevant eligibility.
LTR / Long-Term Resident
A long-term residence category for applicants who meet its eligibility requirements.

Apply online through Thai e-Visa

Create an account at thaievisa.go.th, complete the application, upload the required documents, finish payment and submit. Monitor the dashboard and your email for requests for more documents. Once approved, save the confirmation sent by email.

Use the Thai embassy or consulate responsible for where you actually reside and apply. The United States has separate Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, New York and Chicago jurisdictions. U.S. citizenship alone does not make every mission available from anywhere, and the Washington embassy cannot issue a visa to someone already in Thailand. The Los Angeles document examples in this guide apply only to applicants within that consulate’s jurisdiction.

Visa validity and permitted stay are different

Visa validity is the period in which you can use the visa to enter Thailand. Permitted stay is the time immigration allows you to remain after entry. Even a single-entry tourist visa has a validity period separate from its stay allowance.

A visa does not automatically let you remain until its own final validity date. After immigration, read the actual permitted-stay expiration date in your passport and plan departure accordingly. If you need an extension, apply separately before the permission expires and undergo the required assessment. Applying alone does not extend your stay.

Frequently asked questions

Do U.S. citizens always need a tourist visa?

No. A U.S. ordinary passport holder who meets the tourism exemption conditions can travel without a tourist visa. Work, study and a longer itinerary may need a different category and preparation. Companions holding other passports cannot automatically use U.S. eligibility.

Is DTV the same as a tourist visa?

No. DTV and tourist visas are separate categories. DTV includes qualifying workcation and Thai soft-power purposes, while a tourist visa is for tourism. Read the eligibility and documents for the activity you actually intend.

Do I submit my passport at the embassy?

The U.S. Thai missions use Thai e-Visa for online applications and delivery. The Washington embassy says no passport or original supporting documents need to be mailed or submitted in person. First confirm the mission responsible for your residence, then follow its current instructions.
