FRUIT PRICES · UNITS & CITIES

Look at the unit first
when you compare fruit prices

Two prices for the same kind of fruit are hard to compare directly. Separate whole fruit per kg, a bunch of bananas, one coconut and a pack of cut fruit. Read the notes on buying in each city together with prices whose date, variety and unit are confirmed.

Confirmed Bangkok retail prices

Bangkok retail prices · 14 October 2026
These are prices by variety and grade surveyed by Thailand's Department of Internal Trade. Not every street seller charges the same price.

Keep the price of a cut-fruit bag or tub separate from the per-kg price of whole fruit. In this survey, bananas are priced per bunch.

What to know when buying fruit in each city

Below are notes on choosing fruit on a trip to each city. The prices shown as numbers are Bangkok retail survey values, and we do not use them as ordinary street prices in other cities.

Bangkok

In Bangkok, keep the per-kg price of whole fruit separate from the price of a pack of cut fruit. Below are official retail prices by variety and grade, surveyed on the same day. They can differ from the prices at individual shops in tourist areas.

Chiang Mai

In Chiang Mai, look at longan and lychee, which are linked to the north. For fruit sold by the bunch, it helps to ask whether the weight includes the stalks. Keep dried longan and fresh fruit separate, by product and pack weight.

Phuket

In Phuket, keep cut fruit or a drink that you eat right on the beach separate from whole fruit. If you convert the price of a bag or a cup into a per-kg price of whole fruit to compare, the amount you actually eat can differ.

Ayutthaya

On a day of sightseeing the ruins in Ayutthaya, first decide how much fruit you will eat right away. Units differ by fruit, such as a bunch for bananas and kg for whole watermelon. For prepared fruit in a bag or pack, look at the amount and the price together.

Khon Kaen

In Khon Kaen, tell apart ripe papaya, eaten as fruit, and green papaya, used in som tam. When you buy whole fruit, look at the per-kg price and the total weight, and for cut fruit look at the amount in one pack.

Hat Yai

In Hat Yai, also look at the growing-area seasons of southern fruit. Even the same rambutan or mangosteen comes into season differently by area. When you buy a single bag, ask for the weight in it and the total price together.

To compare on the same price list

Whole fruit per kg
Look at variety, size and grade under the same conditions. For fruit with a thick rind, such as durian, ask whether the kg price includes the rind or is for the flesh only.
Per piece or bunch
The size of one piece or the number in a bunch can differ. Do not convert to a per-kg price on your own; look at the amount you actually buy.
Cut fruit
Look at the amount of flesh in one bag or pack. It differs from the weight of whole fruit with the rind.
Drinks
Cup size, ingredients, and how much ice and syrup are used all differ. Do not compare the kg price of watermelon with a cup of watermelon shake as if they were the same product.
