How should plans change between rainy and dry seasons?

Drier months make temple and market walks easier to plan than in the wet season. However, midday can still be hot in the dry season, so save outdoor sightseeing for morning or around sunset. Visit shopping malls or rest in cafés and at your accommodation during the afternoon to break up the heat.

In the rainy season, include meals and indoor breaks rather than a whole day outdoors. Wait nearby indoors during heavy rain and go out again once it eases. For swimming or boat trips, check wind and wave forecasts as well as rain. Follow local swimming prohibitions and boat operators’ instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Does the rainy season fall in the same months throughout Thailand?

No. Northern and central Thailand, the Andaman coast and the southern east coast have different wetter months. If choosing between Phuket or Krabi and Koh Samui, compare rainfall for the month you plan to travel.

Should I avoid travelling in the rainy season?

Not necessarily. Eat or rest indoors during heavy rain and explore nearby places when it eases. Keep outdoor sightseeing times flexible. Swimming, boat journeys and island tours may need to change or be cancelled according to the day’s weather and local instructions, so read cancellation and change terms when booking.

Is the weather in the table this year’s forecast?

No. The figures average weather observed during 1991–2020. They help compare travel months but do not predict the weather on your trip. Check the Thai Meteorological Department’s actual forecast for your dates before departure.
