Level 1
Regular or jumbo taxi / Grab
Airport-to-hotel journeys and city taxi rides are explained separately. Choose a tab to check how to board, fares, payment and additional charges.
Standard and larger public taxis and Grab use Level 1; pre-booked pickup representatives may meet you at Level 2 arrivals, while Bolt assigns its pickup point in the app. After immigration and baggage collection, go to the meeting or boarding point for the service you chose.

Check the assigned level in the app · go to Level 4 if assigned there
| Level and location | Service used | Where to go and what to check |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 · Inner road by Doors 4–7 | Regular and jumbo (large) taxis | Public Taxi ticket machine → Choose vehicle type → Lane number on the ticket |
| Level 1 · Outer road by Door 4 | Book a Grab ride | Grab Pick-up Point → Queue and lane shown in the app |
| Level 2 · Arrivals | Prebooked pickup / AOT Limousine | Meeting point, gate and name board on the provider's confirmation, or limousine counter |
| Level 4 · Only when departures is your assigned pickup level | Bolt | Check the app's pickup pin, level and gate first → assigned boarding point |
Compare regular vehicles for fewer passengers and bags with jumbo or larger vehicles for more suitcases. A larger vehicle will not necessarily fit every group and all luggage; tell staff your passenger and bag counts to find the right queue.
Go to the inner roadway between Gates 4–7 on Level 1 of the main terminal. Look for Public Taxi signs and distinguish this area from the Grab pickup zone.
Follow the ticketing instructions to choose a regular or large vehicle. Go to the lane number on the machine-issued ticket and keep the dispatch slip until arrival.
Show the hotel name and map address. For city journeys, confirm meter use and ask before departure whether the route uses an expressway and whether extra luggage charges apply.
A regular airport taxi adds the 50-baht airport surcharge, actual tolls and any applicable luggage charges to the metered fare. Check large vehicles or separate services for their own fare terms first. Prepare cash and small notes.
Airport-to-hotel services are often booked as pickups; hotel-to-airport services as drop-offs. Check the BKK departure/arrival direction, flight number, date, local time and accommodation address so you do not book the reverse journey.
When booking an airport pickup, give the passenger and suitcase numbers, vehicle type and any child-seat requirements. Check whether tolls and parking are included, along with waiting time and extra charges for flight delays, and the cancellation terms.
Save the provider's contact details, meeting level and gate, name-board details and included costs. If your booking meets at Level 2 arrivals, go to the area stated in the confirmation.
After immigration and baggage collection, tell the provider you have arrived using your booked contact method. Match your name and booking number, then follow the representative to the actual vehicle boarding point.
For an airport drop-off, distinguish the hotel-lobby meeting time from the airline's check-in time. Agree on departure with the provider, allowing for traffic, and check whether you booked a one-way or return service.
Grab uses the Grab Pick-up Point on the outer road by Door 4, Level 1 of the main terminal. Choose a vehicle that fits your group and luggage; before requesting the ride, check the destination and whether you have selected card or cash payment.
Check the hotel address and pickup pin, then compare vehicle types, displayed fares and extra costs. Request the ride once you have collected your bags and are ready to go.
If the app gives you a 4-digit PIN, follow the staff and driver instructions in the indicated queue to confirm boarding with that PIN. If a vehicle is assigned directly, compare its number plate, driver and lane with the app.
Do not pay the vehicle fare again in cash if it has been paid by card. If you paid tolls in cash, check the final receipt for duplicate charges.
Select the BKK pickup point in Bolt and read its level and door details. If Level 4 Departures is assigned, take the lift or escalator up from Level 2 arrivals and find the specified door and road.
The official guidance says pickup points can change and asks passengers to follow the location shown in the app. Check the point assigned to your current booking before heading to Level 4.
Check the destination and actual pickup point, including the level and gate. To pay by card, make sure an available card is selected before requesting the ride.
Confirm the level and gate through app messages. Follow airport signs and staff instructions, and wait in a designated area where the vehicle may stop.
Check the number plate, vehicle type and driver details. Distinguish the app fare from separate costs such as tolls, and check the receipt when the booking is completed.
Expressway tolls depend on the paid road sections used. The 50-baht surcharge for a regular airport taxi is separate from tolls and does not automatically apply in the same way to Grab, Bolt or a prebooked pickup service.
In a regular taxi, the passenger can pay cash at toll booths or reimburse the driver for the actual toll. For app rides, ask how payment and extras are handled before departure. Keep receipts or record any tolls paid in cash.
| Cost | Regular airport taxi | Grab, Bolt or a pre-booked pickup |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle fare | Metered fare · check the vehicle's conditions | Displayed app fare or total booking price |
| Airport surcharge | Regular airport taxi: 50 baht | Check the booking screen and service-specific terms |
| Tolls | For the sections actually used · paid by the passenger | Check whether it is included or charged separately |
| Luggage, waiting and parking charges | Check baggage rules and vehicle requirements | Check vehicle type, booking terms and waiting time |
For an airport drop-off or app ride, select Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). This is a different airport from Don Mueang (DMK). Tell the driver your flight, terminal and departure level.
For early-morning or late-night travel, check advance booking availability. Leave extra time for rush hour, rain and traffic. Heavy demand can raise app fares or lengthen the wait for a driver.
The level-by-level guidance above is for Suvarnabhumi's main terminal. Do not apply the same levels and gates to Don Mueang, Chiang Mai or Phuket; follow that airport's guidance and the booking app's pickup instructions.
Suvarnabhumi's public taxi service can be contacted on +66 2 132 0360. For an enquiry after your journey, have the dispatch slip, vehicle number and boarding time ready. For app rides, use Help in that booking; for prebooked pickups, contact the provider.
In the Level 1 Public Taxi area, follow the queue and ticket instructions for larger vehicles. Before choosing one, make sure it can accommodate your group and luggage.
Level 2 may be where you meet the provider’s representative. Find the door on your confirmation, then follow the provider to the actual vehicle boarding point.
Go to the level and gate assigned by the app. If it specifies the Level 4 departures floor, go up there.
Check how each service handles separate tolls. If you paid cash, compare the final receipt to make sure they have not been charged twice.
Boarding point, vehicle type and payment options depend on the actual booking screen and local instructions.
From Bangkok's regular metered taxis to Grab and Bolt, check the meter before boarding and choose a ride that suits your payment method and expected cost.

Varies with demand and time of day
Bangkok's regular taxis come in many colours, including yellow–green and pink. Do not judge fares or service solely by colour: check the TAXI-METER sign, vehicle number and whether the meter will be used.
You can hail a taxi or use a hotel or shopping-mall taxi queue. Many hotels have similar names, so have the exact address and map pin ready.
Show the hotel address or map and ask, “Meter, please.” For a regular city journey, check meter use first.
Agree on how the fare is calculated before departure rather than bargaining after arrival. If the driver refuses the meter or asks for an unreasonable fixed amount, choose another vehicle.
Using a toll road can add a charge. Check the route and ask in advance whether to pay tolls in cash or settle them after arrival.
Check the metered fare separately from tolls already paid. Small notes such as 20, 50 and 100 baht make payment easier. Collect your phone and luggage from the boot before leaving.
Near attractions or hotels, drivers may offer a high fixed fare instead of using the meter. For an ordinary city journey in Bangkok, ask for the meter. If the driver refuses, compare another taxi or an app ride rather than continuing to bargain.
Do not pay an extra amount solely because a driver says congestion requires it. Compare the meter or app fare with itemised charges such as actual tolls. You can decline an unwanted shopping stop instead of going directly to your booked destination.
Long-distance trips, travel to other areas and private charters may use a total price agreed in advance. Record the destination, passenger and luggage counts, and whether tolls and parking are included in a message or booking confirmation.
For a street-hailed taxi, it is best to carry cash in baht. Do not board assuming a foreign card will be accepted. To pay by card, register it in Grab or Bolt and select card payment before requesting the ride.
Even when using an app, you must pay cash if the payment method is set to Cash. Check your actual account and booking screen for foreign-card availability. QR transfer information does not mean you can pay directly with a foreign credit card.
If you selected card payment, take care not to pay the same vehicle fare again in cash. Compare separate cash payments, such as tolls, with the final app receipt to check for duplicate charges.
| How to use | Prepare to pay | Check before boarding |
|---|---|---|
| A regular taxi hailed on the street | Cash in baht · small notes | Meter use and tolls |
| Grab | Select cash or an available card in the app | Vehicle type · estimated or confirmed fare · extra charges |
| Bolt | Choose an available payment method in the app | Choose Cash or Card · Fare and extra charges |
Some passengers leave small change as a tip or round up. For example, if the meter shows 93 baht, you may pay 100 baht and leave 7 baht as a tip.
Tipping is optional. You may ask for the exact change, or leave an amount you choose for good service or help with luggage. You do not need to leave all the change from a large banknote.
For the same distance, Grab and Bolt can quote different fares depending on demand and nearby vehicle availability when you request a ride. Rush hour, rain or crowds leaving an event can raise prices or increase the wait for a driver.
This does not mean the app charges more because you use it frequently; it reflects local demand for rides and vehicle supply at that time. If time permits, compare both apps for the same destination and a similar vehicle, or consider public transport for part of the journey.
Regular metered taxis calculate fares differently from demand-based app pricing. Congestion, slow travel and waiting can increase the meter. Meter-based app services such as GrabTaxi can also have a different final price, so check the vehicle type booked.
| Type | Main reasons for a higher fare | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Regular metered taxi | Distance travelled · time charges during congestion | Metered fare · actual tolls |
| Grab and Bolt app-booked cars | Vehicle type · distance · demand and supply when requesting | Fare displayed just before booking · extra charges |
| An app's metered taxi service | Actual metered fare · fees for the selected service | Difference between the estimate and final receipt |
Check the accommodation name, branch and which side of the road you will wait on. If GPS points to a rear hotel entrance or the opposite road, move the pin to an accessible pickup point.
Choose a vehicle suitable for the passengers and suitcases, and check card or cash payment, tolls and additional charges. Compare estimated arrival times before requesting.
Send a message identifying the hotel entrance or a visible landmark. Compare the number plate, vehicle and driver details with your booking before getting in.
Check the app receipt after arriving and compare it with any amounts you paid separately in cash. For lost property or fare issues, contact support through that trip record.
Do not judge by vehicle colour alone; check meter use and the vehicle and service type.
No. Leaving small change is optional.
Distinguish app prices that vary with demand from a regular taxi's metered fare. The amount depends on when you request and the service's terms.
Boarding point, vehicle type and payment options depend on the actual booking screen and local instructions.
