Roti

Thai Roti · โรตี

If you want something sweet from a street stall, try roti. Thinly stretched dough is cooked and served with a sweet sauce such as condensed milk or chocolate. Some menu items add banana, so it is a good choice when you want fruit and a snack together. If the roti is cut up for you, share it piece by piece while it is warm.

What does it taste like?

You enjoy the taste of the thin cooked dough with the sweet sauce. Depending on what goes in and how it is cooked, the crunch at the edges and the softness inside change. In menu items with banana, you also feel the sweetness of the fruit.

Banana and sauce depend on the menu item you order. Choose the topping you want first.

Main ingredients
Dough is cooked and served with sauce such as condensed milk or chocolate. Whether banana or egg goes in depends on the menu item.

The dish and its region

Roti in Thailand can also be met as a sweet street snack. Ayutthaya's roti sai mai is thin roti wrapped around sugar threads, and it is eaten differently from the cooked roti introduced here. Try both and you can enjoy different snacks under the one name of roti.

How to order and eat it

  1. Choose whether you want plain roti or roti with banana and so on, and tell them the sauce you want.
  2. If you want less condensed milk or sauce, ask before it is cooked. Once the sauce has been drizzled on, it is hard to reduce the amount.
  3. Share the cut roti piece by piece while it is warm.

Frequently asked questions

Is it the same snack as roti sai mai?

No. Roti sai mai is an Ayutthaya snack in which thin roti is wrapped around sugar threads. Here we introduce street roti, in which cooked dough is served with a sweet sauce.

Can I order it if I cannot eat egg or milk?

You need to ask about the ingredients in the dough, the toppings and the sauce together. Even a menu item without egg can have an ingredient you avoid in the dough or the condensed milk.
