Watermelon Shake

Nam Taeng Mo Pan · น้ำแตงโมปั่น

If you want a cold drink as you walk on a hot day in Thailand, try the watermelon shake, nam taeng mo pan. Watermelon is blended with water and ice. Unlike watermelon juice that you drink like plain juice, the ice is blended in together so you enjoy it cold. If you want less sweetness, say so when you order, asking for less syrup or sugar.

What does it taste like?

The cold, fine texture of blended ice is added to the taste of watermelon. The taste of one cup can change with the ratio of watermelon to ice and the sweetener added.

If you want less sugar or syrup added, say so before it is made.

The dish and its region

The Tourism Authority of Thailand introduces the watermelon shake as a typical fruit drink made by blending watermelon with water and ice. The familiar watermelon can be enjoyed as a street drink on a Thai trip. Watermelon is a fruit available all year round, but whether a shop actually sells the drink differs from shop to shop.

How to order and eat it

  1. Choose the watermelon shake and look at the cup size and the price.
  2. Before the drink is made, ask whether the sweetness can be reduced. Even without syrup, the watermelon has its own sweetness.
  3. When the drink blended with ice arrives, enjoy it while it is cold.

Frequently asked questions

Is it watermelon juice?

It is a shake made by blending watermelon with water and ice. Because the ice is blended in, the texture differs from a drink of pressed watermelon juice alone.

If I leave out the sugar, will it have no sweetness?

The watermelon's own sweetness remains. The sugar or syrup that adds sweetness differs from shop to shop, so ask before the drink is made for less or none.
