Watermelon shake (taeng mo pan)

Nam Taeng Mo Pan · น้ำแตงโมปั่น

If you feel like a cold drink while walking on a hot day in Thailand, try taeng mo pan. It is a watermelon shake made by blending watermelon with water and ice. Unlike plain watermelon juice, the ice is blended in too, so you enjoy it cold. If you want less sweetness, ask for less syrup or sugar when you order.

What does it taste like?

The crushed ice adds a cold texture to the taste of watermelon. The taste of a cup can change with the ratio of watermelon to ice and with the sweetness added.

If you want less sugar or syrup added, say so before it is made.

The dish and its region

The Tourism Authority of Thailand introduces taeng mo pan as a signature fruit drink made by blending watermelon with water and ice. On a Thai trip you can enjoy familiar watermelon as a street drink. Watermelon is a fruit harvested all year, but whether a shop actually sells the drink differs from shop to shop.

How to order and eat it

  1. Choose taeng mo pan or the watermelon shake on the menu and look at the cup size and the price.
  2. Before the drink is made, ask whether the sweetness can be reduced. Even without syrup, the watermelon itself is sweet.
  3. When the blended drink with ice arrives, enjoy it while it is cold.

Frequently asked questions

Is taeng mo pan watermelon juice?

It is a shake made by blending watermelon with water and ice. Because the ice is blended in too, the texture is different from a drink made only by pressing out watermelon juice.

If I leave out the sugar, will it not be sweet?

The sweetness of the watermelon itself remains. The sugar or syrup that adds sweetness differs from shop to shop, so ask for less or none before the drink is made.
